Designed as an art house with bespoke alcoves, niches, display cabinets and surprise vistas, FARAWAY is designed to intrigue. A three bedroom boutique accommodation retreat that can comfortably sleep six adults, each bedroom has its own bathroom suite, with the middle bedroom, courtyard, entry, dedicated suite and main floor living spaces designed to be wheel chair accessible.

Sited in private landscaped gardens, FARAWAY takes in uninterrupted views across Adelaide Bay to numerous of the Furneaux Outer Islands including Vansittart, Big & Little Dog, Green Island and in the background, Cape Barren Island stretches across the whole horizon. Pathways wind through the parkland garden featuring art installations, endemic copses and a scattered diversity of fruit trees and native edibles.

Location & Surrounds

FARAWAY is located on the township fringe of Lady Barron, on the southern coast of Flinders Island. It is comfortable walking distance to the General Store and coffee club, tennis courts, the Furneaux Tavern, the fishing wharf and the foreshore track with its many delightful beaches. The property backs onto bushland with extensive bushwalking options. It is the perfect base for exploring the whole Island which would require more than one visit.

Your Host

FARAWAY is one man’s double decade passion project, the culmination of fifty years of dreaming and exploring. Andrew Thomson completed an architecture degree in 1974 and then chose to pursue experiential lifestyle choices. After twenty years developing a broad range of artisanal skills, mainly as a designer-maker, Andrew returned to building design with solo commissions and product development in several iconic Tasmanian regional tourism projects.

This is his “Grand Design” incorporating a lot of detailing and luxuries that were not economically feasible in previous commissions. The long years of gestation and construction presented new inspirations that continued to draw out the slog of building in a remote location. Finally opening to guests, Andrew trusts that FARAWAY holds the potential to similarly engage visitors to Flinders Island as it has for him in his forty year love affair with the Island.
